Zimbabwe Prioritizes Conservation in Tourism Development- Minister Rwodzi

Tourism and Hospitality Minister Barbra Rwodzi has highlighted Zimbabwe’s dedication to conservation as a cornerstone of its tourism development strategy.

Minister Rwodzi said this whilst addressing the thematic event on tourism as part of the UN General Assembly Sustainability Week in New York recently.

“Tourism plays a pivotal role in the economy on Zimbabwe contributing 5.7% to the GDP and 3.5% to the employment. And the US $1.16 billion in terms of earnings in 2023 up from $910 billion in 2022. Our country boosts a rich and diverse cultural heritage, wildlife, fauna and flora, stunning landscapes and iconic attractions such as Victoria Falls, the Mosi Oa Tunya as it is well known.

“In line with sustainable development goals, Zimbabwe has embarked on the various initiatives to develop and promote inclusive sustainable tourism practices that benefit our economy, the environment and the communities. One of our key priorities in its conservations is we recognize that our natural resources are our greatest asset,” said Minister Rwodzi

Rwodzi highlighted Zimbabwe’s commitment to conservation through the establishment measures aimed at to preserving biodiversity and safeguard endangered species.

“Through the establishment of national parks, protected areas and wildlife sanctuaries, we have demonstrated our commitment in preserving our biodiversity and safeguarding and dangerous species, including the Black rhinoceros and the elephants,” she said

The UN General Assembly Sustainability Week is a platform provided by the USA to Zimbabwe, allowing the country to share its experiences with other member states and showcase its contribution towards the development of a resilient and sustainable tourism industry.
