The National Railways of Zimbabwe (NRZ) has announced a series of green initiatives aimed at reducing its carbon footprint. These initiatives encompass a wide range of efforts, from upgrading equipment to raising awareness about environmental conservation.

NRZ national spokesperson Andrew Kunambura, outlined the company’s comprehensive strategy to enhance sustainability. “NRZ has upgraded its diesel engines to more efficient and environmentally friendly models, reducing emissions and fuel consumption. NRZ has replaced traditional lighting with energy-efficient LED lighting in its facilities and trains. NRZ has implemented waste segregation, recycling, and disposal programs at its facilities and has implemented measures to prevent oil spills during fueling and maintenance operations,” said Kunambura

The commitment to sustainability does not stop there as he highlighted the adoption of advanced emission-reducing technologies. “NRZ has explored the use of emission-reducing technologies like exhaust gas recirculation and selective catalytic reduction. The company has promoted the use of rail transport as a more environmentally friendly option compared to road transport. NRZ has conducted campaigns to raise employee and public awareness about environmental conservation, working with environmental agencies to implement sustainable practices and monitor its environmental impact,” he said

Fuel efficiency and alternative energy sources are also key components of NRZ’s strategy. “NRZ has implemented fuel-efficient driving practices and optimized its locomotive fleet to reduce fuel consumption. NRZ has explored the use of alternative fuels like biofuels and electricity to reduce dependence on fossil fuels. These initiatives demonstrate NRZ’s commitment to reducing its environmental footprint and promoting sustainability in its operations,” Kunambura added.

The initiatives Kunambura said reflect a broader trend within the transportation sector towards greener and more sustainable practices. By upgrading its fleet, improving energy efficiency, and promoting sustainable practices, NRZ is positioning itself as a leader in the region’s push for a cleaner and more sustainable future.
